What is Debate?
What is debate, really? Wikipedia says "Debate or debating is a formal method of interactive and representational argument." For those who doubt the authenticity of Wikipedia- we confirm this notion as true. In other words, debate is a fun event that incorporates your ability to argue and your speaking skills. Contrary to popular belief and televised "debates", debate is a civilized method of understanding and discussing controversial ideas, and debaters must be ready to argue for both sides.
There are several types of debate suitable for all types of people. If you just want to have some fun and argue, then have a go at SPAR. If you have always wanted to be a serious debater that wants to argue serious issues in the world, LD or Policy(hyperlink) are the for you. If you are somwhere in between, Parliamentary Debate is less serious but useful form of debate that covers everything, from current events to abstract ideas.
Regardless of what you want to do, debate is one of the most useful skills you can learn in your life. Not only will debate allow you to come up with better comebacks, it will help your critical thinking skills as well as your logic. Debate helps you organize ideas, think clearly, and become a better speaker at the same time. The bottom line is: join debate, and enjoy success!
