General Questions

What do I need to know to join Speech and Debate?

You do not need to have any prior experience or training to join Speech and Debate. We teach you everything you need to learn.

Where are team meetings and practices?

In Ms. Perry's room, room 103.

When are team meetings and practices?

Speech is on Mondays at lunch, and Debate is from 3:10-4:15 on Wednesdays.

How do I join?

Simply come to a Speech Practice on monday or Debate practice on Wednesday and we will give you an application form.

How many tournaments do I have to go to?

The more the better. Tournaments are the centerpiece of Speech and Debate, giving you an opportunity to display your speaking/debating prowess. Tournaments are also the best way to learn your event, and they are more fun than practice! See the Tournaments page.

How long are tournaments?

Usually the whole day. Do not make any other commitments on tournament days, because the schedule is never followed exactly, and times often get delayed by up to two hours.

How do I get better?

Participate! When it is your turn to speak, don't let the oppurtunity go! If that is not enough to satisfy your ambitious goals, then practice independently and go to tournaments!

Is Speech and Debate good for college?

Yes. Several members of this team have gone to fantastic schools including U.C. Berkeley and U.C. Los Angeles. However, Speech and Debate is merely a valuable experience and extra curricular activity, and will not give you any transferrable credits for college. Additionally, we do not encourage members to join Speech and Debate just for the sake of slapping another extracurricular activity on their college application. Speech and Debate involves a true commitment and time, and will reap a higher benefit for members who simply do not participate for the sake of it.
