I Should Join...
Speech and Debate is a multifaceted discipline that can return great benefits for your dedication. You can join Speech and Debate for fun, for your education, for your future, or for yourself. Take a look at how each of these for elements translate into reasons why you should join S&D.
...For Fun
You may simply love giving impromptu speeches, performing interpretations, or writing LD cases. You may also simply always have an irresistible urge to break out into harangues about sub-prime mortgages. In these cases, you’ll fit right into Speech and Debate.
Realistically, we realize that many of you probably aren’t like that- but S&D can be fun for you too.
S&D is one of those valuable experiences that can strengthen the bonds of friendship. When you bring your friends along to practices and tournaments, you will automatically be exponentially increasing your hangout time without your parents getting mad.
Tournaments do last for some time, but they aren’t continuous hours of competition. There are hours of down time in which you and your friends will be given opportunities to be independent and explore the wonders of nearby convenience stores or eat at restaurants. Ample additional opportunities for having fun exist- but you’ll have to join before we can tell you about them.
Remember, friendship only exists when you have friends- so the more friends you bring to S&D, the more fun it will be for all of you!
...For Education
There is no doubt that Speech and Debate can teach you invaluable skills. You can learn how to communicate effectively, effectively analyze and research information, construct successful arguments, and much more.
These skills will become a boon to your educational career, as there will be an abundance of speaking and research opportunities for you to seize. With your experience and expertise, you will also have an academic edge against your peers, helping you navigate the competitive world around you.
By actively participating, you can make your Speech and Debate experience an asset in your broader journey of academic advancement. Colleges certainly take notice at the awards you’ve won and the experience you’ve gained, although this shouldn’t be your primary motivation in joining.
On a lighter level, all that talking that Speech and Debate involves can help strengthen social skills. If you find it easier to say “Hello World” in a computer program than in real life, Speech and Debate can bestow upon you the communications aptitude you need to traverse the social world. Even if you aren’t totally cloistered from interpersonal relationships, you still stand to gain with impromptu or interpretive speaking experience under your belt.
What you learn in Speech and Debate will help you wherever you go- whether you are debating about healthcare or trying to ask someone out for prom.
...For The Future
As a citizen of the world, you are responsible to shape yourself into a benefit for society, not a burden. Speech and Debate can transform you into a more informed and worldly individual- ready to speak up when the world needs changing.
With your expertise, you may find yourself propelled to the forefront of society, as Speech and Debate develops skills that ensure success in our metamorphic world.
As our society is becoming increasingly interconnected, whether you are in Timbuktu or Tehran or work as a dancer or CEO, effective communication will be key to success.
Build up the skills that you need to give yourself in the workforce, in your relationships, and in society.
